Thrifting: An In-Depth Guide

My friends and new clients either dread or are delighted in going to a thrift store. Going to a thrift store can be disheartening if you don't find anything or uplifting if you do.

I like to give people these simple tips when thrifting:

  1. Have a goal in mind but don't let it take away from your shopping experience
  2. Have an open mind
  3. If you feel hesitant don't buy it.
  4. Have Fun!
  5. Check the products you're buying for any rips, tears, missing buttons, etc.

Why do I need a goal?

Goals are important because they keep you on track. Instead of buying a whole store of unimportant items, you can find the key items you want and will wear.

When thrifting goals are good to keep us on track, but don't let these goals dictate your whole shopping experience. When you become too focused on the goal you risk becoming narrow minded. You will miss all the wonderful opportunities for things to wear if you focus solely on one thing.
Have an Idea in mind but don't let it be the only thing you're looking for.

I am feeling hesitant...

If you're feeling hesitant about a product for whatever reason do Not buy it. You don't have to. I have clients that have bought something just to hang in their closet. If you don't like something about the piece that you picked out, put it back, it isn't for you. When you find something worth buying, you will not hesitate.

Why should I inspect my items?

Before you purchase anything from the thrift store please inspect it. If you don't you risk missing rips, tears, stains, missing buttons, broken zippers, broken handles, etc. If you make a point to always inspect your clothes, you will never be disappointed when you get home.
***Special Note*** Zippers are my number one complaint about thrift stores, often times the zippers do not work on purses, jeans, shirts, dresses, etc. so I always make a point of sliding the zipper multiple times to make sure it works correctly.

Fun???

Thrifting should be an uplifting trip, finding clothes at a discounted price, who can beat that? If you aren't having fun, is it because you're too focused on your goal? The clothes isn't your style? If you feel like it's becoming tedious or horrible, just leave the store.  The atmosphere isn't for you. I have been to good thrift stores and bad ones. The good ones were ones that were comfortable to me, parking was easy, the clothes was reasonable, the place was fun.
If you aren't having fun, find a new thrift store because there is one out there for you.

Open-Mindedness can be helpful

Most the time thrift stores have relics from the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. and the style isn't so fresh, but sometimes these vintage finds can take an outfit from great to spectacular. Simple pieces are timeless, keep an eye out for these timeless pieces.
